Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

The iPad Mini’s Cannibalization Effects: Overpowering Or Overblown?

promo_compareThe iPad mini seems downright hungry, and it has a taste not just for other small tablets, but for its larger brethren, the iPad with Retina Display. Some analysts are saying as much, with expectations of the iPad mini's cannibalization effect on existing iPad sales ranging from around 10 to 20 percent. But one suggests that it could be more like 50 percent, based on numbers Apple revealed.

Paper by fiftythree updated with expanded color options, Pogo connect support

Paper by fiftythree, the popular iPad sketching app, has recieved a major update with a focus on expanded color options. New features center mostly around colors, including a color mixer, and new palettes. Additionally, Paper has added support for the Pogo Connect Bluetooth stylus, tweaking Paper’s Expressive Ink Engine to respond to pressure when using the Connect.

The new Mixer lets you play with different color shades while keeping Paper's natural, artistic feel. They're using natural blending technology to keep things smooth and logical. Add pigments as you would with real ink or paint, get results as you would with real ink or paint. Yes, yellow and blue makes green!

There's also a set of palettes which Paper says were hand-crafted by color experts. You can flip through them and when you find one you like, you can rest assured that all the colors on that palette will work beautifully, tastefully, together. Palettes are provided for presentations, drafting, portraits, and travel. (And you can create your own with the Mixer, of course.)

The update is free, and the Mixer is available as one of Paper’s paid tools for a $1.99 in-app purchase.

HP ElitePad 900 travels to the FCC, brings pros closer to Windows 8 tablet utopia

HP ElitePad 900 travels to the FCC, brings the pros closer to Windows 8 tablets

HP couldn't help but harsh the mellow of cutting-edge workers when it revealed the ElitePad 900 wouldn't ship until January. Still, there's less chance of any setbacks now that we know the FCC has rubber stamped the Windows 8 tablet. The version passing through the agency is a 3G model for mobile road warriors and touts the 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands we'd expect to for HSPA on AT&T, T-Mobile and Canadian networks. Few other surprises exist; we're mostly happy to know that NFC exists alongside dual-band 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. No, the approval won't be much consolation to the suits and ties wanting a tablet of their own as of yesterday, but it should be a relief to IT managers planning a much more creative use of the company budget in 2013.

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. Goophone, a Chinese company best known for cloning Apple products, reportedly will release its iPad mini doppelganger in November. The "GooPad mini," which already appears on posters, will sell for $99, while Apple's iPad mini will cost $329 but won't be sold right away in China. Goophone has even taken the liberty of ripping off Apple's "Every inch an iPad" tagline: "Every inch a GooPad mini."

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap
Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don't miss out on this one!

Eye-Fi Pro X2 16GB Class 10 hands-on

EyeFi Pro X2 16GB Class 10 handson

Technology's always getting smaller, right? As such, it shouldn't be a surprise that Eye-Fi can now cram 16GB of storage and a WiFi radio into one of its SD cards, but somehow, it still is. This is the latest, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 16GB, the company's first Class 10 unit. It'll be landing on the doorsteps of tech-savvy photographers in the next week, so we thought we'd take a quick look at how things have improved with this year's vintage and if it can justify that $100 price-tag.

Windows Phone 8 Review: You're Not Perfect, But I Like You Anyway

Windows Phone 8 is better. Better than the auspicious mobile reimagining Microsoft trotted out in 2010, and better than the bag of promises it delivered last year. Those felt like betas compared to Android and iOS, a half-baked platform long on promise. More »

Open webOS on the Galaxy Nexus is starting to look good

Work continues on Open webOS for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (and likely will for some time), and today the webOS Ports team has brought a video of UI scaling. As you can see, it's looking more and more like a working smartphone user interface (and animation is getting pretty smooth, too), though we wouldn't recommend getting anywhere near this as a daily driver yet.
